Onion Pakoda (Onion Fritters)

Onion Pakoda or Onion fritters, everybody's favourite tea time snack.
Deep fried snacks are not the healthiest of options but then once in a while, we indulge in home made deep fried snacks..
Onion is also beneficial for our health, guess thats why we use onions in most Indian dishes. The nutrients in onion can protect against cancer, fight fungi and bacteria, promote cardiovascular health, reduce high blood pressure and insulin resistance, and aid in weight loss.

Some points to remember when deep frying
  •  discard the oil once used.
  • If you think we are wasting oil, then use as little as possible, even it means frying only 2 pakodas at a time.
I know most of my friends love "Onion Pakoda" but not many make it at home since they feel it doesn't turn out as crispy at home compared to outside.
Try this recipe of mine, you will be able to make yummy Onion Pakodas as crispy as in the hotels/shops.
And I feel eating deep fried home made snacks is better than eating outside.

Ingredients :
Onions - 4
Green chillies - 1
Mint - few leaves
Besan or Gram flour - 3 tbsp
Rice flour or corn flour - 2 tbsp ( this gives the crispiness)
Hing or Asofoetida - 1 tsp
Red chilli powder - 1 pinch
Oil for frying
Salt to taste
Method :
Chop the onions into small pieces.
Chop green chillies and mint leaves.
Take a large bowl, add the chopped onion, green chilli, mint, hing, red chilli powder, salt, besan and rice flour.
Mix well with hand pressing the mixture well.
Do not add water at any time during the process.
Keep aside for 20 mins.
Now again knead the mixture well with your hand.
Now you will realize that the onions have become moist and the mixture is quite wet.
Now shape into round uneven fritters or pakodas.
Take a deep frying pan, add oil and fry the fritters till golden and crispy.
Serve with Tomato Ketchup and Mint Chutney.
