Drumstick Pitla - A Maharashtrian delicacy

Pitla is a Maharashtrian delicacy sometimes also referred to as Comfort food. Its a side-dish that is served with the famous Maharashtrian Bhakri or Jowar Roti.
Pitla is mostly made using some greens like Methi/Fenugreek leaves or Spinach/Palak.
This version of Pitla is made of Drumsticks and I learnt this from my Grand Aunt who lived in Mumbai.
Quick and easy to make and can be eaten both with rotis or bread.

Serves 3
Ingredients
Drumstick - 2
(you could also use 1 cup of fenugreek leaves or Spinach)
Bengal Gram flour / Besan - 1/2 cup
Onion - 1 - chopped
Green chillies - 2 - chopped
Asafoetida/Hing - 1/4 tsp
Red chilli powder - 1/4 tsp
Oil - 1 tbsp
salt to taste

Method:
Cut the drumsticks into equal pieces and keep aside.
Combine the gram flour in 1 cup of water, along with asafoetida, salt and chilly powder and mix well.

Heat the oil in a tava and fry the onions and green chillies until they turn soft and golden.
Add the drumstick pieces, salt and 1/2 cup water and cover and cook for about 5 minutes till the drumsticks are cooked.

Add the gram flour mixture and cook on a slow flame for a few minutes, while stirring continously.
Serve immediately with jowar roti, garlic chutney and onions.
