Oats Idlis

Oats contain more soluble fibre than any other grain, resulting in slower digestion and an extended sensation of fullness. One type of soluble fibre, beta-glucans, has proven to help lower cholesterol.
Oats are high in fiber and a good carbohydrate source and can serve as a natural treatment for high cholesterol.
Since oats is a very healthy and nutritious food and as breakfast is the most vital meal of the day, the perfect way to start it would be with a bowl of oats.
But although its healthy its not really tasty.
So I made this Oats Idlis which is not just healthy but also tasted like rice idlis.
When served with Chutney or Sambhar, you would never even know the difference.




Ingredients : 
Oats - 2 cups
Urad dal or split black gram - 1 cup
Salt to taste
Oil for greasing
Method :
Wash and soak the urad dal in lukewarm water for about 3 hours.Wash,drain and grind to a smooth paste.
Wash and soak the oats in water for about 1 hour.
Now gring oats to a smooth paste.
Now  mix both these ground pastes and cover and keep aside. Let it ferment overnight.
Next morning grease the idli moulds.
Put one tablespoon each of the batter into the moulds and steam for 15 mins.
Serve hot with Coconut Ginger Chutney or Sambhar.

  2. Bopanna will love this. I have always wondered why we grind the ingredients separately for idlis. Any idea ?

    1. Grinding the Urad dal separately makes it more airy and fluffy. So when u add the rice rava it ferments well due to the air pockets. But Tamil Idli is made by grinding altogether, it doesnt comes out little less fluffy compared to our idlis.
